Technical Skills

Painting

·         Oil media, including traditional oil, water-miscible, and alkyd.

·         Water-thinned media, including transparent watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and casein.

·         Strong technical background in numerous painting processes, including traditional grisaille, glaze, and scumble techniques, various direct-painting processes, and diverse contemporary practices, including those incorporating digital image manipulation, collage, and mixed media.

·         Extensive investigation of traditional and contemporary media, solvents, and additives, their roles in creating optical effects, effects on the stability of the paint film, and their practicality in the contemporary studio.

·         Broad range of image-making strategies ranging from observational realism to illustration practices to nonobjective painting, with an emphasis on borrowing from multiple modes at once, and maintaining awareness that form and content are always interdependent.

·         Knowledge and commitment necessary to maintain a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible painting studio.

·         Professionalism in the creation, documentation, storing, shipping, and exhibition of artwork.

 

Drawing

·         Diverse media, including graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, chalk, pastel and conté crayon, marker, pen and ink, etc.

·         Strong focus on observational drawing proficiency as an essential foundational element in any art practice.

·         Background in exploring broad conceptual issues in mark making, including expanding definitions of drawing to include time-based, site-specific, and three-dimensional practices.

·         Proficiency in figure drawing, perspective, observational realism, and preparatory/conceptual sketching.

 

Supporting Technologies

·         Extensively employ online course delivery and management software including Blackboard, Angel, and ISIS to supplement classroom learning.

·         Experienced with contemporary presentation technologies, including PowerPoint, digital projection, smartboards, etc.

·         Regularly use image manipulation software such as Jasc Paint Shop Pro, and Adobe Photoshop, for use in the production, documentation, and presentation of artwork, and in creating and presenting classroom lectures.

·         Woodworking background, with proficiency in all of the tools and processes required to build professional quality canvas stretchers, panels, frames, and crates.
